There are dozens of flight search engines — but which one actually finds the cheapest fares? We tested 5 platforms on 10 real routes to find out. The results reveal a clear strategy for when to use each.

How We Tested

We searched 10 routes across domestic, transatlantic, and Asia-Pacific on Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak, Momondo, and Flighko. All searches were done simultaneously. We compared base fare, total price (with fees), and unique routes found.

The Results

Google Flights Best for speed + UI
Skyscanner Best for budget airlines
Kayak Best for package deals
Momondo Best for unique routes
Flighko Best multi-source comparison

Google Flights — Best Overall UI

Google Flights loads fastest and has the best map-based search. The price tracking feature is excellent. However, it excludes many budget airlines and OTAs, meaning it doesn't always show the absolute lowest fare. It's best for price discovery and inspiration.

Skyscanner — Best for Budget Airlines

Skyscanner includes Ryanair, Wizz Air, AirAsia, and other low-cost carriers that Google Flights misses. Its "everywhere" search feature is unmatched for flexible travelers. On European routes, Skyscanner found fares 15-30% lower than Google Flights in our tests.

Kayak — Best for Trip Packages

Kayak's "hacker fares" combine two one-way tickets from different airlines to save money. Its package deals (flight + hotel) can save 20-40% compared to booking separately. The price forecast tool is also accurate within 10%.

Momondo — Best for Route Discovery

Momondo consistently found unique multi-stop combinations that other engines missed. Its flight insight feature shows fare breakdowns and historical pricing. Owned by Kayak but worth checking for complex itineraries.

Flighko — Best Multi-Source Comparison

Flighko aggregates from the same global distribution systems as the big players but offers a cleaner, faster interface. It's especially strong on error fare detection and price drop alerts across all sources simultaneously.

The winning strategy: Start with Google Flights or Flighko for initial price discovery. Then verify on Skyscanner for budget airline routes. Check Kayak for package deals if you need hotels too. Never book without checking at least two — prices vary by up to 30%.

Price Tracking Winner

Google Flights has the best price tracking system — it emails you when prices drop. Flighko and Kayak also offer alerts. The key is to set up alerts on at least two platforms for the same route — they don't always trigger simultaneously.
